Property in Fortaleza, Ceara could be set to benefit from a $240 million (£134.9 million) World Bank loan designed to boost the region’s growth. The Ceara Inclusive Growth Project, the recipient of the funding, aims to improve local infrastructure and raise the economic competitiveness of the region by focusing on five key areas - education, health, public sector management, business environment and water resources.

John Briscoe, the World Bank’s director for Brazil, commented: “The Bank is proud to have been a partner of Ceara for 20 years, during which the State has made extraordinary progress.”

He added that the loan demonstrates “the Bank’s increasing role at the state level in Brazil”.

Ceara’s gross domestic product rose by 95.1 per cent between 1985 and 2006, above the 71 per cent average for Brazil as a whole.

Among the features helping with the growth is Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza, which has numerous links with the US and Europe and received 3,613,634 passengers in 2007, according to government statistics.
